Our Journey

About Us

We didn’t start this gym to be the biggest, most impressive school around. We started it because we felt something was missing — and we wanted to build the kind of place we had always been looking for.

I (Josh) started jiu-jitsu because I wanted to feel more confident in myself — and to be able to defend myself if I ever needed to.

​

I was too nervous to try it alone, so I brought my partner Rose with me. We had been watching Gracie self-defense videos together and figured it was worth trying a real class.

​

What surprised me was how fun it was. I quickly fell in love with the training. I started going to every class I could — sometimes 2 or 3 times a day — and in my spare time, I was drilling, studying, and watching instructionals non-stop.

​

I improved fast. Not because I was strong, athletic, or explosive — I’m none of those things — but because I put in the work and focused on what actually helped me grow.

​

Before i knew it, I became a coach at my old gym. But over time, I found that the classes didn’t really add value anymore. I was only going to test the things I’d been drilling on my own. I’d sit through the 45 minutes of technique, but was really only there for the 10 minutes of sparring at end, because that’s where I could apply what I’d learned.

​

Eventually, I stopped going to the class portion entirely. I would drill, do specific training, and show up just for sparring — where I could really test what I’d been working on..

​

And it worked. I was consistently winning comps, not by overpowering anyone, but by using the techniques I’d studied and pressure-tested on my own. I was often submitting people in under a minute — against stronger, more experienced opponents — because I understood the positions better and had trained them with purpose.

All of that made me realize something important: there had to be a better way to train — and to teach.

Rose

Rose started jiu-jitsu on the same day as me (Josh). From day one, she trained just as hard — taking multiple classes a day and improving fast.

​

She became especially good at passing — probably because she had to deal with my guard. That sharpened her technique quickly. She went on to win comps and was known for her precise, effective style.

​

Eventually, she became the head kids coach at our old gym. Her classes were productive, structured, and fun — and the kids loved her for it.

​

But like me, she started to get frustrated with how things were run. She had ideas about how to make classes better, more focused, and more useful for students — but her suggestions weren’t welcomed by management.

​

She wanted to give more to her students, and she felt boxed in.

Why We Built This Gym

We opened Open Mat Jiu Jitsu in March 2024 because we wanted a space where we — and others — could actually improve. Not just show up and get through another class, but train with purpose.

​

I (Josh) wanted to push toward a long-term goal of becoming a No-gi World Champion. That meant more sparring, more time on the mat, and a structure that actually helped people get better — not just follow a routine.

​

We built this gym around that mindset.


But it’s not just for competitors. A lot of people who train here are total beginners.
We remember what that feels like — unsure, awkward, not knowing if it’s the right place. So we’ve made sure this place doesn’t feel like that. No pressure. No weird hierarchy. Just a bunch of people training and figuring things out together.

We don’t pretend to have it all worked out. But we’re serious about improving — and helping the people around us do the same.

How We Train
(And Why It Works)

Every class is researched and tested.

We don’t teach random techniques or guess what might work. Every class is built around instructionals from world-class grapplers like Gordon Ryan, Lachlan Giles, John Danaher, and Mikey Musumeci.

We reference exactly what we study.

Each week, we post our lesson plans on Instagram — including the name of the instructional and where the material comes from — so students can revisit the source, study deeper, or just see how it all fits together.

Open mats every day.

Space for you to grow. Whether you’re experimenting with new techniques or refining the basics, you need time on the mat.

We train through games and resistance.

Instead of isolated reps with no feedback, we use resistance-based games to pressure-test each position. You learn faster when you're solving problems, not just memorizing moves.

We constantly adapt.

If something doesn’t work, we update it. If it works better, we keep it. That’s how you improve — and that’s how we coach.
