Adults Classes at Open Mat Jiu Jitsu
Class Types
Fundamentals
-
The core of our adult program, open to all levels — from total beginners to seasoned students.
-
This class focuses on developing the essential movements and strategies from all major positions in Jiu Jitsu. You’ll learn through a combination of coach-led drills and constraint-based games that simulate real resistance in a safe, structured way.
-
We revisit and refine key concepts each training cycle — ensuring there’s always something new to learn, even for advanced students.
-
If you're new and find the depth overwhelming, our intro course is a great first step before joining.
60 minute • Open to all levels
Extension
-
A class that complements Fundamentals with broader, alternative techniques.
-
While not necessarily more advanced, Extension covers effective techniques that might not be considered the “highest percentage” options — but are still valuable and widely used. These classes often include extra games or drills tailored to the technique.
-
If you’re short on time, we recommend prioritising Fundamentals. But Extension is a great way to expand your technical vocabulary and stay playful with your learning.
45-minute class • Open to all levels
Workshop
-
A student-led class focused on self-directed learning with coach support.
-
Each week, students choose a position, movement, or submission they want to improve. They’ll create a constraint-based game and work with a partner to drill or play it, also receiving feedback and technical input from coaches throughout the hour.
-
This format empowers students to identify gaps in their Jiu Jitsu and take ownership of their progression.
60-minute class • Open to all levels
Open Mat
-
Open Mat is your time to roll, drill, explore techniques, or play positional games at your own pace. A timer with set work and rest intervals will be running, but there is no formal instruction. Coaches are often available for questions and guidance.
-
Kids are welcome to attend with their parents, but must stay off the mats unless they are training and should avoid getting close to active rolls for safety.
60 - 120 minute • Open to all levels

Is Jiu-Jitsu For Me?
Absolutely.
You don’t need to be in shape, flexible, or have any experience to start. Many of our students begin with no martial arts background and all kinds of fitness levels and that’s perfectly okay.
Jiu-jitsu is a great way to build strength, cardio, and mobility while learning practical skills and staying mentally engaged. You’ll be supported to go at your own pace, with coaches and teammates who remember what it’s like to be new.
Whether your goal is fitness, confidence, self-defence, or just trying something different, Jiu Jitsu is for you.
